A Place in Heaven (2013)

Synopsis

A young officer returns to his base after a daring mission. The cook's assistant, a religious Holocaust survivor, is envious of him. He believes that there is a place in heaven reserved for the brave officer who endangers his life for the sake of his Jewish brethren. The officer, in the spirit of the Zionist ethos, is secular and a non-believer. At the moment, he is so hungry that, for a plate of shaksuka, he is prepared to sign a contract transferring his secured place in heaven to the cook. Some forty years later, the present time of the movie, the tables have turned - the officer, now a retired general, is on his death bed in the hospital. His son who, to his father's horror, has found religion, is in a race against time. Before his father dies, he has to find that cook's assistant who, forty years earlier, bought his place in heaven. If and when he finds him, the son has to nullify the contract. If he doesn't, his father will go to hell.

Apur Panchali (2014) - Goa

Synopsis

Talking about Apur Panchali, Kaushik said, "The film is inspired by the real-life story of Subir Banerjee, the child actor, who played Apu in Ray's Pather Panchali. Despite being one of the most celebrated child actors in the industry once, nobody cares to find out what he is doing now; no one remembers him. My film is a take on that. The USP of the film is the subject which has never been explored in Bengali cinema before. Interestingly, Subir's life has an uncanny resemblance to what Ray had depicted in The Apu Trilogy. And that's what inspired me to make this film. Albeit Pather Panchali was Subirda's first and last film, but if you study the man's life, you'd sit and ponder if Satyajit Ray had written The Apu Trilogy keeping Subirda in mind. Having said that, I'd like to make it clear that my film is a work of fiction, and not Subir Banerjee's biography."

It was in August 1955, when the film was released theatrically and its been 58 long years hence. But ironically Subir 'Apu' Banerjee never became a part of any film again in his entire life. The most striking point being, his real life existence started bearing an uncanny resemblence to the 'reel life' Apu that was created by Bibhutibhashan Badopadhay's. The saddest and probably the most wierdest coincidence being, when Subir acted in Pather Panchali as a kid he didn’t have the faintest idea that he was destined to carry the 'reel life' character’s curse throughout his life.

Beatriz's War (A Guerra da Beatriz (2013, 101 Minutes, Drama) )- Goa

The Tetun-language drama, about a couple torn apart during the Indonesian occupation.
East Timor’s historic first feature film, A Guerra da Beatriz, is the haunting, passionate story of one woman’s conviction to remain true to the man she loves and the country for which she fought. It is a bold reworking of the 16th century French ‘Martin Guerre’ story. In this adaptation the original story is transposed to Portuguese Timor during the Indonesian occupation of the small nation. Sixteen years after Beatriz’s husband disappears during a brutal massacre by occupying Indonesian forces she is troubled by his mysterious return: is he the young man she’d lost or is he an impostor?

The Great Beauty (2013) Poster
SYNOPSIS

Aristocratic ladies, social climbers, politicians, high-flying criminals, journalists, actors, decadent nobles, prelates, artists and intellectuals - whether authentic or presumed - form the tissue of these flaky relationships, all engulfed in a desperate Babylon which plays out in the antique palaces, immense villas and most beautiful terraces in the city? They are all there, and they are not seen in a good light? Jep Gambardella, 65, indolent and disenchanted, his eyes permanently imbued with gin and tonic, watches this parade of hollow, doomed, powerful yet depressed humanity. A moral lifelessness enough to make one’s head spin? And in the background, Rome in summer. Splendid and indifferent, like a dead diva?

We next meet Isabelle in the fall, back in Paris, where we discover that she's set up a website to accept appointments from johns she will meet for sex in chic hotel rooms. It is only with one regular client that she allows herself to experience any pleasure. That is until the unthinkable happens and she's forced to deal with the consequences of her decisions.

Presented over the course of four seasons, the mood of each characterized by a distinctive song, Ozon's film provides an unprejudiced glimpse into the adolescent female psyche. While he subtly hints at an economic subtext, Ozon perfectly captures the sense of fearlessly searching for your identity.

3 Histoires d'Indiens (2014) - Berlin

Synopsis

Three stories spread across four seasons. Érik is a quirky but ingenious guy. His place is in utter chaos: full of bric-a-brac, old TV sets, antennae and electronic scrap. And, in between, his dogs are sniffing around. No matter what he constructs from all this stuff – it always works. Érik practically always has a camera in his hand with which he films himself, his family and the desolate place where they live. This because he’s working incessantly on his dream of setting up a small TV station which he hopes will bring his community together. Shayne is a loner, always roaming about listening to hauntingly beautiful music. He seems deep in thought and people around him barely take any notice of him. Alicia and her two girlfriends are more sociable. Together they read stories of crime and punishment; they also lovingly turn an abandoned little shack into a temple where they pay homage to a sacred female native spirit. This feature film adopts a meticulous, almost documentary approach in its portrayal of a new generation of native Americans living on the reservations. These young people are more active and less resigned than their parents.
